Studebaker Corporation in South Bend, IN commissioned Raymond Loewy and a team to design a new sports car to help financial troubled Studebaker in 1961. Loewy and his design team were to have a new design clay model in only 6 weeks. The team spend 5 weeks working on the Avatni design in Palm Springs, CA.

Loewy insisted on the new iconic Avatni design features: no radiator grille as he felt it dated the car's design, a coke bottle silhouette and a fastback like tail and the off center hood bulge.

A decision to build the Avatni's body from fiberglass was also dictated by time and budget. Molded Fiber Glass (MFG) of Ashtabula, OH. was tapped to produce the Avanti bodies. (MFG) was also the manufacturer of the Chevrolet Corvette bodies.

The Avatni's body is made of 129 individual fiberglass parts, a first for Studebaker.

As Studebaker entered the summer of 1962 it appeared the company had achieved the impossible. The Avanti was designed, engineered and entering production in just 15 months after its inception. Only one question still remained: Would it be able to turn Studebaker fortunes around?

At a base price of $4,445.00 the Avatni was the most expensive car in Studebaker's lineup and could easily exceed $5,000.00 when fully accessorized. Studebaker billed the Avanti as "America's Most Advanced Automobile". By the end of 1962 Studebaker had produced only 1,389 Avanti's to supply its 2,000-plus dealers. Studebaker built 4,643 Avanti's over its 18-month production run.

This Avanti is one the very first produced being serial number 99. This car is a 289 cubic inch, with Paxton Supercharger boosting a 275 horsepower with a four-speed transmission.

In August of 1962, Studebaker dispatched Andy Granatelli and his brothers and a specially prepared Avanti to the Bonneville Salt Flats for "engineering test." In reality, the tests were an attempt to capture United States Auto Club speed records. The Avanti garnered 29 USAC records.

Hp ratings were under rated because of cooling issues that Avanti's suffer from
