The revolutionary Rocket V8 was so successful it shaped the Oldsmobile brand for an entire generation.
~Shared with Cadillac the distinction of being the first modern ohv V8
~Oldsmobile started building an entire identity around the rocket theme, with the Oldsmobile emblem eventually incorporating a rocket icon.
~The Rocket V8 was one the first high-compression engines (7.25:1), but Charles "Boss" Kettering felt that the true potential of the engine would not be realized until gasoline quality was good enough to allow 12:1 compression ratios (they did reach 10:1 by 1966).
~"Oversquare" design (cylinder was larger then stroke) used a short stroke for reduced piston travel (and wear).
